Turnitin - For Canvas

Error Message:

The Originality service is not available for this paper. A problem occurred when processing the application URL.

Situation:

  • The student has uploaded their report and Canvas has generated a link that states “View the report”
  • The student is taken to a new tab/window, with their work behind a popup with the error message above.

Information:

This occurs because the link generated in Canvas is generated too early and links directly to a report that has not been created yet.

Resolution:

  1. Have the student click the blue “ok” button on the popup error
  2. Wait 5 minutes
  3. Still on the Turnitin window/tab showing the students work, direct them to refresh the browser
  4. If the report hasn’t been generated yet, the error will reoccur. If it has been generated, then the student will see a % score and text highlighting.
  5. If the error reappears, then repeat the steps. It may take upwards of 24 hours for the report to generate due to volume at Turnitin, complexity of the paper or complexity of the matches.

Additional Information for users if they need it:

The delay is on the Turinitin side, the error message just isn’t clear.

CSU Global offers this as a benefit to the student to help them submit quality work. Unfortunately that may have the drawback of having to wait some time for the report to generate.

If users report any issues with Turnitin while using Internet Explorer 9 please try the following;

  1. Reset the Internet Explorer 9 browser with the steps at http://windows.microsoft.com/en-ca/windows7/reset- internet-explorer-settings-in-internet-explorer-9 (disregard the option to delete Personal Settings)
  2. Restart the browser and access the course > Turnitin section
  3. Important!! You will see the “Only secure content is displayed” message at the bottom of the screen. You will need to click the “Show all content” button. We attached a screenshot of this message for your reference.
  4. Click “Check Your Assignment” and you should see the Assignment Checker tool

NOTE:

  • If the student’s submission is recent then the report may still be processing and a 15-20 minute wait may be required while the report is generated.
  • The faculty member should reach out to their mentor for guidance on whether a report is required for grading this assignment. I.e. for image submissions
  • Faculty may contact the student to have them resubmit with an accepted file type.

Turnitin – API Errors

Situation:

Instructor encounters a “Nonce” or “Timestamp” error when accessing Turnitin or Turnitin reports.

Information:

This occurs because the security feature of Turnitin isn’t getting the correct token information from the Instructors browser.

Resolution:

Have the instructor refresh the page and attempt to access again. This may need to occur up to three times to: get a wrong token, generate a new token, work.

Turnitin – Auto-sync hasn’t occurred / No reports

Situation:

Instructor states that no reports have been generated for an assignment, or that the sync hasn’t worked.

Please advise the instructor to press the sync button when it appears. It typically takes about 5 minutes for the reports to generate, but may take longer because the reports are queued, not necessarily done simultaneously.
